Hello Ubuntu Server!

The purpose of this communication is to provide a status update and highlights for any interesting subjects from the Ubuntu Server Team. If you would like to reach the server team, you can find us at the #ubuntu-server channel on Freenode. Alternatively, you can sign up and use the Ubuntu Server Team mailing list.

Spotlight: Ubuntu Bionic: Netplan

Josh on the Canonical Server team took a look at Netplan on Ubuntu Bionic. He shows some initial use cases and provides examples of some configurations.

cloud-init

  • Added ‘status’ subcommand to report whether cloud-init is ‘running’, ‘done’ or ‘error’. Also a tool for scripts to block on cloud-init completion with cloud-init status –wait
  • Added ‘clean’ subcommand as a developer tool to easily remove cloud-init artifacts and re-run cloud-init on reboot.
  • Cloud-init datasources now store standardized instance metadata in /run/cloud-init/instance-data.json which can be referenced by scripts to get instance-related variables such as region, availability-zone, instance-id and more.
  • Update pylint to 1.7.4 and run on tests and tools dirs
  • EC2 uses instance-identity doc from metadata to obtain instance-id and region [Andrew Jorgensen]
  • SUSE: remove delta in systemd local template for SUSE [Robert Schweikert]
  • VMware: Support for user provided pre and post-customization scripts [Maitreyee Saikia]
  • Fix ds-identify warning on VMWare platform by correctly identifying the OVF datasource. ds-identify identifies OVF when an iso9660 filesystem exists on cdrom containing ovf.env content (LP: #1731868)
